Fact: Day One

We knew we wanted to make it to San Antonio, Texas by the night of Day Two so any mile we made it down the road on Wednesday night would just save us driving time on Thursday. So even though it was later than we’d hoped when we left, with great pomp and circumstance (ironic, since Jim is going to miss his own graduation from nursing school)...off we went.

We made it to the New Mexico border without incident and had a HILARIOUS time getting Dwight’s picture taken at the sign (he was solemn, as usual).
We saw hardly any cars on the drive, but TONS of wildlife.

One thing about deer, they have very good vision.
One thing about me, I am better at hiding than they are. At vision.

Here’s our travel report for the night by the numbers:

3 number of cars we passed in 3 hours of driving
85 number of elk/deer we saw
290 number of rabbits we saw
289 number of rabbits who got away
15 number of the teensiest field mice/rodents we’ve ever seen that ran directly in front of our van
44 number of minutes after midnight, local time, that we stopped for the night
183 total number of miles we drove on Day One (the distance from Show Low, AZ to Silver City, NM)
33 number of seconds we could barely breathe because we were laughing so hard at Dwight on the tip of Matt’s finger while Matt was on my shoulders trying to get Dwight’s silhouette on the Welcome to New Mexico sign (totally worth it)
2 number of times the night clerk at the Holiday Inn Express got a text while I was checking in
0 number of times that the clerk checked his phone to see who had texted him while I was checking in
1 number of road signs that misspelled “sandwich” as “sandwhich

Dwight's head peeking up on the bottom of the sign...
THERE he is!
Matt got ahold of the camera--here's Rach's super-cute new haircut at the New Mexico border.
